Heart disease rates in the United States fell 20% in the last four decades. While advances in prevention and treatment are clear contributors to the decrease, risk factors including blood pressure, cholesterol and smoking continue to have an impact.  Recent studies point to the value of healthy lifestyles choices for reducing the risk of a coronary event especially for those with a genetic predisposition for heart disease risk factors including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity.

The Great Plains Quality Innovation Network continues to promote the benefits of lifestyle and prevention for heart disease in line with the goals of the Million Hearts initiative including the use of evidence-based practices including Aspirin therapy, Blood pressure control, Cholesterol management and Smoking assessment and cessation (ABCS).
