Changes in how the body functions are clear as individuals increase in age. These changes also impact the effects of medication ranging from common over-the-counter cold medicines to prescriptions used to manage chronic disease and mental health concerns. Previously tolerated drug therapies may begin to create adverse events and lead to further health complications.

Kristen Carter, PharmD, from Lynn’s Dakotamart in Pierre, SD, shared insights on the impact of aging on medication by addressing the following objectives:

  1. Describe the functional changes that occur in the normal aging process
  2. Discuss common medications typically identified for deprescribing
  3. Review practices for medication transitions and quality of life considerations

The Medication Safety Collaborative Action Series includes four learning events; followed by an Action Group to allow for additional discussion, coaching and developing of quality improvement efforts to improve medication safety.
