Recognizing an individual in need and guiding them to the support services necessary to lift themselves from a desperate situation is a skill every South Dakotan should possess.
The Crisis Prevention and Recovery Best Practice Briefs series will highlight basic tools to recognize and assist an individual in crisis, resources available to reduce the risk of a crisis, and programs and services to reinforce change after a major intervention or treatment program.

The constant bombardment of images, messages, and daily demands prevent most individuals from truly listening and understanding those around us. Mastering the skill of silencing the distractions and engaging in a meaningful conversation can literally save a life. We should openly talk about mental illness, addiction and suicide. The more we can normalize this conversation, the easier it will be for people who are struggling to reach out for help. Suicide is a serious problem that can have lasting harmful effects on individuals, families and communities. Everyone can help prevent suicide by knowing the warning signs and where to get help.
Sheri Nelson, suicide prevention director for the Helpline Center, continually trains staff and volunteers to listen and encourage individuals experiencing suicidal desperation. She will share valuable resources and tips for recognizing and navigating a crisis conversation.
Objectives:
- Describe the variety of interview techniques and methods
- Recognize the signs of an individual in crisis
- Explain the resources available to provide continued support
