The Center for Collaboration and Advancement in Pharmacy is excited to join the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in promoting the observance of U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week (USAAW), raising awareness of the harms posed by antibiotic resistance, and emphasizing the importance of appropriate antibiotic use and stewardship programs. We ALL share responsibility for doing our part to ensure that antibiotics remain useful for future generations.
Antimicrobial resistance can impact anyone, regardless of age or location. Resistant germs can quickly spread within healthcare settings, as well as throughout communities, the environment, and our food supply. The best way to combat antimicrobial resistance is by preventing infections before they occur. Ensuring access to clean water, proper sanitation, widespread vaccination, and quality healthcare can help reduce infections and curb the global spread of resistance. Using antibiotics and antifungals appropriately improves patient outcomes by enhancing infection treatment, minimizing side effects, and slowing the emergence of resistance.1
