The Wall Street Journal recently featured Dr. Kenneth Kizer, Director of the Institute for Population Health Improvement at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Kizer discussed technology innovations that can help healthcare providers use new methods to reach large groups of people.

He said technology being used to improve population health is still in its early stages but eventually will change healthcare by connecting patients and providers. Technology will make healthcare more convenient, help people stay healthy, help patients to recover from illness more quickly and allow providers to coordinate their care.

Dr. Kizer said one new strategy UC Davis has developed is a pain management tele-mentoring program aimed at reducing the overuse of prescription opioid drugs. Another program is looking to manage patients with diabetes by integrating data from mobile health apps and devices with information in their electronic health record.
