national nurses month

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to test the healthcare industry, the importance of nurses has been highlighted more than ever. In recognition of their hard work and dedication, May is celebrated as National Nurses Month.

National Nurses Month is an annual celebration that honors nurses and the vital role they play in healthcare. This year, it will be observed from May 1 to May 31, 2023. The ANA has chosen the theme “Nurses Make a Difference” for this year’s celebration, highlighting the positive impact that nurses have on their patients, communities, and the healthcare system as a whole. The theme aims to recognize the tireless efforts of nurses in providing quality patient care, improving health outcomes, and advocating for patients’ rights.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) released the 2023 Nursing Month Resource Toolkit which provides resources, templates, and ideas to recognize nurses and offers ideas and templates to promote the value of the nursing profession. Download the Toolkit and access articles and information on available resources. Once downloaded, you will need an Internet connection to download individual resource files, such as logos, certificates of appreciation, online ads, etc.

During National Nurses Month, healthcare organizations and communities across the country will celebrate nurses and their contributions. Hospitals and healthcare facilities will hold special events to honor their nurses, and community organizations will organize events to recognize the importance of nursing. Nursing schools will also participate in National Nurses Month by hosting events to showcase the important role nurses play in shaping the future of healthcare.

A month-long celebration of the nursing profession allows for greater opportunities to promote understanding and appreciation of the invaluable contributions of nurses. The month will be divided into four weekly focus areas — Self-Care, Recognition, Professional Development, and Community Engagement.nurses month

  • Self Care (May 1-7); This week is dedicated to cultivating and maintaining optimal mental health and physical well-being.
  • Recognition (May 8-14); Honor the work of nurses who lead, excel and innovate, not only in our healthcare systems, but also in our communities, which makes them vital to transforming the future of health care.
  • Professional Development (May 15 – 21); Access resources and insights to guide you in your professional development. Focus on how you can excel and lead in your nursing career or inspire and help others in their professional nursing journey.
  • Community Engagement (May 22 – 31); Focus on engaging with your community this week, whether virtually or in-person. Educate members of your community on what nurses do beyond the bedside — advocacy, shaping public policy, or serving as organizational board members, among other duties. Encourage them to support current and future nurses.

National Nurses Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the critical role that nurses play in the healthcare industry. It is an opportunity to show gratitude and appreciation for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to patient care.
