Four hospitals in the Great Plains QIN region appeared on Becker’s Healthcare list of “100 great hospitals in America.” The hospitals included on this list have been recognized nationally for excellence in clinical care, patient outcomes, and staff and physician satisfaction. The hospitals are selected based on analysis of ranking and award agencies, including U.S. News & World Report’s 2018-19 rankings, CareChex, Healthgrades, CMS star ratings, Leapfrog grades and IBM Watson Health top hospitals as well as through nominations.

The four hospitals in the Great Plains QIN region are CHI St. Alexius Health, Bismarck, ND; Nebraska Medicine-Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE; Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD; and University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, KS.

Following are summaries of the four recipients in our region provided by Becker’s Healthcare:

CHI St. Alexius Health (Bismarck, ND) – CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck was founded in 1885 and aims to provide care to residents in North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana. The hospital is part of CHI St. Alexius Health, which was formed through the merger of several health facilities in 2016. Each hospital within CHI St. Alexius is committed to violence prevention and together created the ND Violence Prevention Program, which aims to achieve systemwide violence reduction by 2020. CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck was ranked the No. 1 hospital in North Dakota by U.S. News & World Report for 2018-19.

Nebraska Medicine-Nebraska Medical Center (Omaha, NE) – Nebraska Medical Center is the teaching hospital for the University of Nebraska Medical Center and is part of Nebraska Medicine, which traces its roots back to 1869. The 718-bed hospital has earned a reputation for providing high-quality care and was recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the No. 1 hospital in Nebraska for 2018 – 2019. Nebraska Medical Center, which has a team of more than 1,000 physicians, received the Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award from Vizient in 2016 and 2017.

Sanford USD Medical Center (Sioux Falls, SD) – The 545-bed, 4,000-employee Sanford USD Medical Center is a teaching hospital for the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. The medical center is focused on giving its patients access to cutting-edge technologies, and in 2017 it opened a new 100,000-square-foot facility to house Sanford Imagenetics, a comprehensive program integrating genetics with internal medicine. The hospital is ranked No. 1 in South Dakota on U.S. News & World Report’s Best Regional Hospitals list.

University of Kansas Hospital (Kansas City, KS) – The University of Kansas Hospital was established in 1906 as part of the University of Kansas School of Medicine and has since grown into a regional powerhouse. University of Kansas Health System was formed as a combination of the hospital and the University of Kansas Physicians in 2017, and the system opened a new 92-room surgical wing that same year. In 2018, the health system became a founding partner of a clinically integrated network, Centrus Health and launched its Strawberry Hill Campus, which will include expanded mental and behavioral health services. In February, the University of Kansas Hospital announced plans to launch proton therapy treatments for cancer patients.
