Evidence shows a provider recommendation is the most influential reason for an individual to follow through with prevention or treatment services. Providers who use motivational interviewing techniques are increasing behavior change and creating positive health outcomes.
Having been diagnosed with diabetes himself, Eric L. Johnson, MD, is familiar with the obstacles and challenges of managing a chronic disease. His recent presentation “Helping the Patient with Diabetes Be Realistic” held on Tuesday, April 25, shared key communication tips for gaining trust and increasing compliance.
Dr. Johnson is an associate professor at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences as well as president of the American Diabetes Association-North Dakota affiliate and president of Tobacco Free North Dakota.
