Breast cancer awareness

Breast cancer is a significant health concern, affecting millions of people worldwide. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, approximately 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime and in 2024, an estimated 310,720 women and 2,800 men will receive an invasive breast cancer diagnosis.¹ These statistics highlight the importance of early detection and prevention.

While these numbers may seem daunting, there is hope. Emerging research suggests that vitamin D plays a crucial role in breast cancer prevention. Studies have shown a strong correlation between vitamin D intake and lower breast cancer rates. In fact, it is estimated that 75-80% of breast cancer cases could be attributed to vitamin D deficiency.²

Research indicates that vitamin D can not only prevent breast cancer but also improve outcomes for those who have already been diagnosed. Studies have found that vitamin D levels among breast cancer patients are significantly correlated with survival rates. Ensuring that individuals have adequate vitamin D levels, we can significantly reduce the burden of breast cancer and improve overall health outcomes.

Great Plains QIN’s hosted a learning event on this topic, “Helping Long-Term Care Residents Keep Their Shine“. Dr. Beth Sanford shared how we can improve overall health and health outcomes through a better understanding of vitamin D testing, use and education. Vitamin D intake is a a safe, effective, low-cost intervention that can make a big health impact.
