Hispanic American Heritage Month (September 15th – October 15th) is a time to honor the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans and address the disproportionate impact of tobacco on their communities. Tobacco companies have targeted this demographic, leading to high rates of tobacco use among Hispanic American youth.
To combat this issue, The Truth Initiative® has recently published an article, “Tobacco’s harmful impact on Hispanic and Latino Americans,” discussing the high rates of tobacco and nicotine usage among Hispanic Americans. It mentions a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), demonstrates the effectiveness of their text message-based quit vaping program, particularly among underserved populations. The Truth Initiative® program has shown significant success in helping Hispanic adolescents quit vaping, with participants 35% more likely to quit within seven months compared to those not enrolled. To learn and read more about how the Truth Initiative has contributed to reducing smoking, access the article below.
Given the early onset of smoking, college campuses play a crucial role in prevention and cessation efforts. The Truth Initiatives’ Tobacco/Vape-Free College Program provides grants to support 100% tobacco/vape-free policies, benefiting over 1.4 million students, faculty, and staff. By raising awareness, advocating for stronger policies, and supporting community-based initiatives, we can work towards a healthier future for all.
