The South Dakota Department of Health – Tobacco Control Program recently updated the Tobacco Control Orientation Toolkit. This is a self-guided tutorial that provides the information and resources necessary to understand why tobacco use is considered the #1 preventable cause of death in the US, as well as the evidence-based and promising strategies that can reduce tobacco’s toll.

quit smoking pictureOriginally, this toolkit was created as a required training tool for any organization who receives funding from the SD Tobacco Control Program, but, it is also available to members of the public as a FREE training tool for anyone who is interested in receiving comprehensive training on tobacco control.

Course Modules and Learning Objectives

Module One: Evolution of Tobacco Control

  1. Explain how events in U.S. history affected tobacco use.

Module Two: Impact of Tobacco Use

  1. Describe drivers of trends in tobacco use.
  2. Describe the impacts of tobacco use in the U.S. and in South Dakota.

Module Three: Fundamentals of High Impact Tobacco Control Strategies

  1. Describe why certain tobacco control strategies are considered “high impact.
  2. List the high impact strategies that are proven effective to reduce tobacco use in the population.
  3. Explain how each high impact strategy works to reduce the toll of tobacco.

Module Four: Identifying and Engaging Priority Populations to Advance Health Equity

  1. Define key terms related to health equity and health disparities.
  2. Describe how inequities contribute to tobacco use, difficulties quitting, and negative health effects.
  3. Summarize best practice approaches for engaging populations that experience tobacco related disparities in South Dakota in policy and environmental change strategies.

Module Five: Mobilization

  1. Describe key attributes of a strong coalition of community partners that will help advance tobacco control goals.
  2. identify credible sources of state and local data and information to use when planning tobacco control initiatives.
  3. Identify the types of partners that need to be engaged for a coalition to be most effective.
  4. Choose the appropriate steps to lead an existing coalition through different stages of development.
