Diabetes Education and Support: What’s Your Role?

National Diabetes Month is observed every November to draw attention to diabetes and its effects on millions of Americans. The National Diabetes Education Program’s (NDEP) 2015 theme Diabetes Education and Support: Everyone Has a Role. What’s Yours? highlights the need for ongoing diabetes education and support among people with diabetes and those who care for them.

Help people in your community learn more about the importance of diabetes education and support with resources from the NDEP and the National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

As you plan your recognition activities for National Diabetes Month, there are many amazing resources available online.

You may consider partnering with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).  NKF is the leading organization in the U.S. dedicated to the awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney disease, a major risk factor for Medicare beneficiaries with diabetes.  Visit their website for a list of local offices in your area.

Another source, the National Kidney Disease Education Program, offers materials for providers and patients. Offering patients steps to prevent kidney disease as well as explanation regarding kidney tests and what to ask their doctor. The information is web-based, however, most of their educational topics are also available as printable PDFs. http://www.niddk.nih.gov/

The American Diabetes Association is another potential partner in your state or community. They can often provide materials to organizations to promote “American Diabetes Month.” Their theme this year is America Gets Cooking to Stop Diabetes.
