There are an estimated 6.7 million Americans with Alzheimer’s dementia in 2023, and the incidence is expected to increase as the number of 65 and older surges.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 75% of people with Alzheimer’s disease will be admitted to the nursing home by age 80. There is much we do not understand about the causes, diagnosis and treatment of persons living with dementia and brain changes. However, we do know that a caregiver’s understanding of dementia while using a person-centered care approach for the person with dementia is the foundation of quality care. Lori Hintz, RN, CADDCT, CDP, Quality Improvement Advisor 
Great Plains Quality Innovation Network (GPQIN) / South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care (SDFMC) 

Hintz is a licensed registered nurse with experience in both hospital and nursing home environments in a variety of areas including medical, surgical, intensive care, patient education, cardiac rehabilitation and staff development. She has an extensive background in forming and managing a community development organization and working with people from many walks of life.

Since 2011, she has worked for the South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care (SDFMC); she serves as a Quality Improvement Advisor with the Great Plains Quality Innovation Network, the QIN-QIO for North and South Dakota. Her work is focused on reducing healthcare acquired conditions and improving nursing home quality. She consistently has recruited 95% of South Dakota’s nursing homes in quality care collaboratives.

Lori is active in many long-term care initiatives and committees at the local, state, region and national level. Lori is a TeamSTEPPS master trainer and has assisted with individualized QAPI training to nursing homes. She also assists nursing homes in using the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). She facilitated the South Dakota Dementia Coalition and helped secure funds and program development for the South Dakota Music and Memory program. She is a Certified Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Instructor (CADDCT) through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP) and has provided statewide training. She serves on the South Dakota Healthcare Association’s education committee and Mitchell Technical Institute Nursing Program Advisory Board and a member of the South Dakota Infection Control Council and the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Quality.
