Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) have emerged as a significant healthcare concern, causing discomfort, disrupting daily life, and posing potential complications, necessitating a deeper understanding of why they have become a pressing problem. This informative session covered the different types of UTIs. Perry provided knowledge on risk factors, symptoms and the criteria for diagnosis. Interpretation of the results from a urinalysis and urine culture, as well as treatment options for each type of UTI. Lastly, she shared examples of how facilities can implement antimicrobial stewardship UTI initiatives into practice.

Speaker: Emily Perry, PharmD
Dr. Perry serves as the antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist at the Center for Collaboration and Advancement in Pharmacy at North Dakota State University (NDSU). In this role, she works as the antimicrobial stewardship lead for the North Dakota’s Department of Health and Human Services. Perry is working to improve antibiotic usage across all care settings, implement antimicrobial stewardship initiatives, develop processes to track interventions and provide education to stakeholders across the state. Dr. Perry earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2006 from NDSU and became certified in infectious disease in 2019 by the Society of Infectious Disease Pharmacists. She has practiced in community and hospital pharmacies.
