The Community Health Center Movement: Reflections of Our Origins as We Strategically Map the Future

This session invites participants to look back through the movement’s history to consider our present with renewed inspiration. It also invites further consideration of the Health Resources & Services Administration’s (HRSA) expectations regarding health centers and their work to advance health equity. In recognition of the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we’ll also hear from community leaders about local efforts to advance racial equity. All health centers and partner organizations are invited to attend.

Janice Sherman is a visionary health care leader with more than 25 years of supporting the nonprofit health care industry in building successful operations. With decades of federally qualified health center (FQHC) experience, she demonstrates subject matter expertise to strengthen primary care practices in all areas of compliance and governance. As an advocate for the community health center movement during her career, she has served as CEO of different health centers in Georgia and the primary care association (PCA) in Mississippi.
Today, she serves as the founder and CEO of Partners in Equity (PIE), a nonprofit organization she founded and established in 2020. She and the team at PIE partner with health care and community leaders to advance equity and social justice via models that address the social determinants of health.
Kuol Malou & Julian Beaudion are with The HUB SD, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to serving aspiring, emerging, and excelling refugees, immigrants, Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities. The HUB develops programming for professionals to not only learn best practices to excel in their fields but also to form a collaborative network across industries, job functions, and interests.
Kayla Jones is a volunteer with the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition and helped develop the coalition’s diversity, equity, and inclusion curriculum for organizations. Kayla has been an activist and mentor for students of color in our region for years and continues to do so at the middle school level. She is currently attending NDSU for a master’s in educational leadership and plans to use her degree to focus on the diversity and retention of students of color in higher education.
As the Community Healthcare Association of the Dakotas, CHAD believe that everyone has a right to high-quality, reliable, affordable health care, regardless of where they live.
