Relentlessly Pursuing a Diverse and Inclusive Organization
Trust is the foundation for every strong personal and professional relationship. Earning trust begins by seeking to understand. Monument Health offers cultural awareness education programs to provide perspective and promote relationship building among those providing and receiving health care.
In July 2018, Monument Health was recognized by the American Hospital Association, alongside four other healthcare systems, and received the Equity of Care honoree award. Dr. Sandra Ogunremi highlighted the success and impact of the Monument Health efforts, “Nearly 4,000 physicians and caregivers, who took the Press Ganey Engagement and Culture of Safety Survey in 2021, showed overwhelmingly positive perceptions in the five key areas connected to diversity. The overall system average showed 84.92 percent perceiving our organization and teams as valuing diversity. These results were above the national average.”
Ogunremi is proud of the strides being made at Monument Health and will be the presenting on the success of Valuing Diversity at Monument Health as part of the Best Practice Briefs: Reducing Health Disparities series. “I became engaged by discovering and learning about health disparities across the country and wanting to make a difference,” Ogunremi explained. “Once we understand the meaning of diversity, equity, and inclusion, we will be better equipped to implement positive change with actionable steps and measurable results. This led to the initiative of system-wide education on diversity, equity, and inclusion to ensure we understand the importance of cultural awareness. We are relentlessly pursuing and maintaining a diverse and inclusive organization where everyone has a sense of belonging.”
The Best Practice Briefs are facilitated by the South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care and the Great Plains Quality Innovation Network.
