Who would’ve known the warriors in the battlefield of COVID-19 would be at your local hospital, nursing home, assisted living center, memory care community and community retirement center? So often overlooked and taken for granted they have served on the front line. The CNAs, LPNs, RNs, nurses, dietary workers, cooks, housekeepers, laundry workers, maintenance engineers, activities professionals, social services directors and managers are fighting the fight with valor and we celebrate and recognize you.
National Nurses Week [May 6-12] National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6, also known as National Nurses Day, through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. National Nurses Week is a time to celebrate and recognize the contributions nurses have made in our communities. Take time out this week to thank those in the nursing profession for dedicating their careers to caring for our loved ones. This week’s theme is Compassion|Expertise|Trust,
National Nurses Day [May 6] On this day, we raise awareness of all nurses who ‘zealously seek to nurse those who are ill wherever they may be and whenever they are in need.’ At the end of the 19th century, “The Lady With the Lamp”— or as she is more widely known, Florence Nightingale — founded modern nursing. Thanks to her strict use of hand-washing and hygiene practices while caring for wounded soldiers in the Crimean War, Nightingale and her helpers reduced the death rate from 42 percent to 2 percent — ushering in nursing as we know it today. On May 6, we recognize the important role nurses play in our lives by celebrating National Nurses Day. With over 3 million working nurses in the US today, nurses make up the highest percentage of our country’s healthcare workforce.
National Hospital Week [May 10-16] National Hospital Week celebrates hope and healing, and the hospitals, health systems and the women and men who support the health and well-being of their communities through dedication and care from the heart. National Hospital Week provides an opportunity to thank all of the dedicated individuals – physicians, nurses, therapists, engineers, food service workers, volunteers, administrators and so many more – for their contributions.
National Skilled Nursing Care Week [May 10-16] National Skilled Nursing Care Week (#NSNCW), formerly National Nursing Home Week, recognizes the role of skilled nursing care centers in caring for America’s seniors. In the midst of battling COVID-19, it is more important than ever to celebrate NSNCW and recognize the staff and residents in our skilled nursing care centers across the nation. Some facilities are facing the virus head. In addition, current social distancing rules and the inability of friends and family to enter the buildings has changed much of the day to day life of the staff and the residents. We recognize, applaud and and thank all the team members in our homes for keeping loved ones safe and comforted.
“When people serve a purpose beyond themselves, they have a remarkable capacity for resilience. And with resilience comes the possibility of hard-earned wisdom, renewed courage and enduring compassion. All of these possibilities exist for each of us.” ~ Doug Kilgore
