Opioids & Behavioral HealthBetter Together.
The misuse of opioids is taking a toll on our country, our communities and our families.
Distribution of large quantities of opioids in the last decade contributed to the opioid crisis, which cΘontinues to impact every age group and social demographic. Originally intended to provide relief from pain, misuse of this prescription medication has destroyed careers and relationships, ruined and has resulted in death.
- In 2017 the United States Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency and announced a 5-Point Strategy To Combat the Opioid Crisis
- 130 Americans die of overdose every day from use of prescribed or illicit opioids
- Older adults are among the groups affected by the opioid misuse because they often use prescription opioids to cope with painful chronic conditions.
Carefully monitoring provider and patient opioid prescription patterns along with recommending alternative pain management methods and addiction treatment can impact the opioid epidemic and save lives. As a healthcare community, we can address and prevent misuse or abuse by collaborating to promote awareness, to monitor opioid prescribing and to evaluate impact.
