Great Plains QIN: Essential Components of Fall Management and Injury Prevention Webinar I January 24, 2023

Falls are one of the most challenging clinical concerns to manage causing serious injury even death to residents. During this Webinar, our speakers shared a fresh approach to manage falls and prevent injuries that is practical, applicable and sustainable.

American Association of Post-Acute Care Nursing (AAPACN) curriculum development specialists, Jessie McGill, RN, RAC-MT, RAC-MTA and Alexis Roam, MSN, RN-BC, DNS-CT, QCP,  will explain MDS coding for falls and how the fall Quality Measures (QMs) are calculated. Participants will also be introduced to current evidence-based practices and how to build the necessary clinical capacity to manage falls and prevent injuries more effectively.

Objectives:

  • Apply evidence-based practices to successfully manage falls and prevent injuries.
  • Utilize resident level and system level fall data and translate it into information that can be used in fall management.
  • Implement methods to develop the nurses’ skills to effectively identify fall risks, implement preventative measures, and provide post-fall care.

Jessie McGill, RN, RAC-MT – Curriculum Development Specialist, AAPACN

Before joining AAPACN, Jessie worked as the director of clinical reimbursement for a large long-term care organization overseeing 17 clinical reimbursement consultants across 21 states including nearly 300 living centers. She has more than 17 years of long-term care experience including restorative nurse, MDS coordinator, regional clinical reimbursement specialist, clinical reimbursement trainer, and director of clinical reimbursement. Jessie is passionate about developing the skills of nurse assessment coordinators, restorative nursing, and improving residents’ quality of life and care.

Alexis Roam, MSN, RN-BC, QCP-MT, DNS-CT – Curriculum Development Specialist, AAPACN

Alexis started her career as a certified nurse assistant and has served in a variety of roles, including DNS, MDS coordinator, and nursing instructor. Alexis was a program manager for Missouri’s QIO, assisting skilled communities with their quality improvement efforts. Alexis has served as a regional nurse and a consultant supporting clinical operations, compliance, and risk management. She is passionate about post-acute care and has held a board member position with her state’s AHCA affiliate and her state’s board of NHA. She also teaches a leadership program at the University of Missouri.
