The Opioid & Naloxone (ONE Rx) team at North Dakota State University’s Department of Pharmacy Practice recently received recognition for a paper  they authored titled, Program evaluation of the Opioid and Naloxone Education (ONE Rx) program using the RE-AIM modelThe article was published in the September 2020 edition of Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy (RSAP). The paper was selected as ‘Best Paper of Research in Social Administrative Pharmacy (RSAP)’ for the year 2020 and has earned the RSAP Best Paper Award.

One RX LogoONE Rx is an innovative approach to educate patients who receive prescribed opioid medications in participating community pharmacies in the state of North Dakota. ONE Rx aims to stem opioid misuse by increasing awareness when patients fill an opioid prescription. Addressing opioid use prior to misuse is a cornerstone to help communities. The program also delivers education on the use of naloxone to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Learn more. 

The paper evaluates the implementation and impact of the ONE Rx program in North Dakota community pharmacies utilizing the RE-AIM model. The five domains of the RE-AIM include Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance. The findings demonstrated success and positive population impact. The RE-AIM Model identified strength in the areas of efficacy, adoption and maintenance, and the need for improvement in the areas of reach and implementation. The paper will be published in Volume 17(3) of the journal due out in early March 2021.

The authors of the paper are Mark Strand, PhD, Heidi Eukel, PharmD, Oliver Frenzel, PharmD, MPH, Elizabeth Skoy, PharmD, Amy Werremeyer, PharmD, and Jayme Steig, PharmD. Steig is a Quality Improvement Advisor for the Great Plains Quality Innovation Network. The other authors are at North Dakota State University.
