The Federal Task Force on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria has released an updated National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria. This updated plan provides strategic actions to address antibiotic-resistant infections over the next 5 years, including:

  • Supporting infection prevention and control to decrease healthcare-associated antibiotic-resistant infections 20% by 2025
  • Assist local responses to decrease community-acquired antibiotic-resistant infections 10% by 2025
  • Collect antibiotic use data from 100% of US acute care and 50% of critical access hospitals
  • Double CDC’s investments in state and local health departments

“While progress has been made since the release of the original National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria, there is still opportunity for improvement. The Great Plains Quality Care Coalition (GPQCC) seeks to improve patient safety and reduce the spread of infections. This National Action Plan will support GPQCC efforts.” added Jayme Steig, PharmD, RPh; Quality Improvement Advisor with the Great Plains QIN.

Although the main purpose is to guide U.S. government activities, the National Action Plan is also designed to guide action by public health and healthcare partners in a common effort to address urgent and serious antibiotic-resistant threats that affect people in the U.S. and around the world. CDC is addressing its role in accomplishing these goals through its Antibiotic Resistance Solutions Initiative.
