American Nurses Association Nurses Month May

National Nurses Month (Week Three) focuses on professional development; an opportunity to focus on how you can excel and lead in your nursing career or inspire and help other nurses in their professional journey.

When it comes to nursing, education does not stop when you complete your last exam or finish the last challenging clinical rotation. Textbooks and classrooms may have been replaced by clinical settings and scrubs, but for as long as you are a nurse, there will always be a way to become better. This is true for nurses as all levels, which is why lifelong learning is one of the pillars of the nursing profession.

Professional Development Week  | Ways to Participate

  • Commit to participating in at least two free professional webinars. Look for webinars on current topics and those that will expand your skills like communication, teamwork, and problem solving. Sign up for this year’s live virtual nurses event, “You Make a Difference,” on May 18 at 12:00 p.m. CT. Up to 4.0 hours of CNE available.
  • Take a certification prep course from the American Nurses Association and prepare for a certification examination through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
  • Inspire the next generation of nurses. Volunteer as a professional mentor. Look for creative ways to share your nursing experience, such as through videos or social media. Visit ANA’s Mentorship Program website to learn how you can connect with nurses and offer support.

“Being a nurse has positively impacted my life in so many ways. I’ve got to experience so many different opportunities because of my role as a nurse,” shared Natasha Green, MBA, RN; Great Plains QIN Quality Improvement Advisor. Natasha continues to say, “because of my nursing field, I am able to serve in a variety of roles which help improve patient care. I’ve been able to work directly with elderly and patients with dementia. I’ve been able to work in critical care settings saving the lives of others. And I’ve been able to work in quality and leadership which allows me to share my skill set and coach others. My role has allowed me to travel to many places and learn about many different patients and cultures.”
