Quality Improvement Advisor | Great Plains Quality Innovation Network

My new role with Great Plains Quality Innovation Network, is Quality Improvement Advisor.  I will be devoting my time to doing what I love, Quality improvement.  I will work hard to improve resident safety, nursing home quality of care and care in communities.

Stephanie MedunaThe one thing I love about quality is to hear the excitement in a nurses or administrators voice when they have reached a quality goal they wanted to reach.  It is so rewarding to hear the tone in one’s voice when they know they are providing great quality of care and its rewarding to me knowing I supplied them with the tools and support to reach their goal.  Providing great quality of care makes for happy residents, families, and staff.  Knowing you are following the best standards of care makes for a great workplace.

I have been in healthcare for almost 30 years. My first job, as an LPN, was at a clinic. While working part time I earning my RN degree, I worked with a pediatrician for 8 years in the clinic setting. I felt I was ready for a change and applied for a job at the local hospital on the Med-surg floor in case management. It was here where I learned of my love for quality. I built the case management position from the ground up and sought feedback from patients, physicians and the nursing staff. During this ten years, I completed a clinical documentation improvement course and transitioned to lead case manager and then quality director/risk manager. I then took a position as a care coordinator. I had over 80 patients with a radius of 60 miles. During this time, another job in quality at a local nursing home opened and felt I needed to go back to quality. I worked recently at my previous position for six years. I did quality improvement, infection control and a small amount of risk management. It was quite an experience being an infection control nurse during the pandemic but, it made for some interesting days. And, I am so happy this professional journey has led me to my recent position at Great Plains Quality Innovation Network.

I was married to the man of my dreams, but God needed him more and he was taken from me shortly after our 24th wedding anniversary. I was left with two amazing adult children – Colby, who lives in Fargo, ND and Kaylee who lives in Dickinson, ND. I also have a spunky 5-year-old granddaughter, Journey, who keeps me going and tires me out at the same time. I am so honored to be working for the GPQIN and look forward to meeting you all!
