Overview and Purpose:

Joyce Black, PhD, RN, will provide an update on the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel’s (NPUAP) changes in terminology and in the staging system. In addition, Dr. Black will discuss pressure injury prevention and treatment strategies due to medical device-related pressure injuries and mucosal membrane pressure injuries.

Featured Presenter:

Joyce Black, PhD, RN, is an Associate Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. She is best known to this group through her work with the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel, especially in staging pressure ulcers, Deep Tissue Injury and the 2009 Guidelines. Dr. Black is certified in Wound Care and is a member of the American Academy of Nursing for her work in Deep Tissue Injury.

This webinar is designed for all long-term care staff.

  1. Describe the rationale for changing the term pressure ulcer to pressure injury
  2. Identify the changes in the 2016 NPUAP staging system
  3. Identify pressure injury prevention and treatment strategies.
