The recent Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) Statistical Brief presents statistics on the costs of Emergency Department (ED) visits with diagnoses of mental and substance use disorders in the United States using the 2017 Nationwide Emergency Department Sample. Hospital claims data found that 16 percent of hospital ED visits involved one or more mental and substance use disorder diagnoses. The average cost per ED visit for these patients was 19 percent higher than the average for all ED visits.  Medicare beneficiaries had the largest share of cost for ED visits for anxiety and depressive disorders.
