Suicide claims more lives than traffic accidents and exceeds the number of homicides more than twice.
As the number of deaths by suicide continues to increase, it has become a necessary public health issue to be addressed within health care. Although most individuals who eventually die by suicide, including children and adolescents, receive health care services in the month prior to death, providers at the point of care often do not detect suicidal thoughts.
