doctor discussing health issues with patient

On July 21, FierceHealthcare reported the Cleveland Clinic is helping doctors improve the patient experience by teaching communication strategies that create better relationships with patients. One of the biggest challenges in implementing the new program was convincing doctors that it was necessary; most thought their communication skills were fine, according to Adrienne Boissy, M.D., chief experience officer of the nonprofit multispecialty academic medical center. She said patients did not feel the same way and shared this feedback with the doctors. “Putting patient comments about how they felt when you communicated with them, about how effective your language was, and how that made them feel – putting that back at the physicians, and showing them, ‘this is how patients felt during their interaction with you’ – I think is a very powerful way of driving that interest and change,” she said. Now, the approach they took is compiled into a book and is required training for physicians at the facility.
